Dangote Begins Project to Curb Ghana’s Sugar Imports

Aliko Dangote, president and chief executive of Dangote Industries Limited, has announced the launch of what he described as “a major agro-industrial project” in Ghana that will reduce the country’s reliance on imports to meet its sugar needs.

“A new chapter is unfolding in Ghana!,” Africa’s richest man wrote in a LinkedIn post on Sunday, saying the Dangote Sugar Refinery project will be located in Kwame-Danso, Bono Region.

He said the project will feature a daily cane crushing capacity of 12,000 tons, irrigation of 25,000 hectares, as well as production of sugar, molasses, and ethanol.

“With land secured and necessary permits obtained, we’re moving forward with the support of Ghana’s ‘One District, One Factory’ initiative. This project addresses Ghana’s annual $162 million sugar import bill, fostering a local, sustainable, and impactful solution,” Dangote said.

“At Dangote, we envision more than just a factory. We see a catalyst for autonomy, employment, and continental transformation. Join us in shaping Africa’s future!,” he added.
