[BREAKING] Uber Exits Nigeria After 12 Years, Ends Operations Today

Ride-hailing company Uber has announced the closure of its operations in Nigeria, effective Wednesday, bringing its 12-year presence in the country to an end.

Uber told customers in an email that that the move followed a review of its business.

“We have made the tough decision to wind down our operations in Nigeria, effective 2 September 2026,” the company said.

The US-based ride-hailing company launched in Lagos in 2014, becoming one of the earliest major global ride-hailing platforms to enter Nigeria and helping reshape urban transportation in the country.

Uber said it recognised that its departure could disrupt customers’ routines and apologised for the inconvenience.

“We know this may cause disruption to your routine, and we sincerely apologize for the inconvenience,” the company said.
The company’s Help Center will remain available until September 23, 2026, to handle final account-related queries.

Uber’s exit marks a major development in Nigeria’s increasingly competitive ride-hailing industry, where global and local platforms have battled rising operating costs, regulatory pressures, driver economics and changing consumer demand.

The company did not disclose in the customer communication the specific reasons behind its decision to leave Nigeria.

Uber’s departure comes more than a decade after it began operations in Lagos, expanding its footprint over the years as app-based transportation became an increasingly important part of mobility in Nigeria’s major cities.

The company thanked Nigerian customers for using its platform.

“Since we first launched in Lagos in 2014, it has been an absolute privilege to be a part of your daily life connecting you with independent transportation providers,” Uber said.

“Thank you for welcoming us into your city.”

The exit is expected to reshape Nigeria’s ride-hailing landscape, with rival platforms and local operators positioned to compete for Uber’s drivers and customers.
