DP World Pledges Fresh $500,000 to Expand Eye Hospital in Nigeria
Global logistics company DP World has announced an additional investment of $500,000 to expand the Tulsi Chanrai Foundation (TCF) Eye Hospital in Abuja, Nigeria, bringing its total funding for the project to US$1.5 million.
The new investment deepens a partnership that began in 2019 and is focused on tackling avoidable blindness, a persistent public health challenge in Nigeria. Since the collaboration started, the Abuja Eye Hospital has carried out 60,000 eye operations, 63% of which were provided free of charge to patients unable to afford care, according to a statement on Tuesday.
“Access to quality eye care is not only a health priority, it is a social and economic imperative,” said Mohammed Akoojee, CEO and managing director, DP World Africa. “The impact achieved at the Abuja Eye Hospital demonstrates what is possible when purpose-driven organisations collaborate to deliver sustainable, long-term change.”
Operated under TCF’s Mission for Vision programme, the Kukwaba-based hospital in Abuja provides comprehensive eye care, including cataract and glaucoma surgeries, pediatric ophthalmology, low vision care and extensive community outreach. Its cross-subsidy model uses revenue from paying patients to fund free treatment for those in need, supporting both equity and financial sustainability.
The fresh $500,000 funding will support a major expansion of the facility, including an increase in bed capacity from 82 to 160. Plans are also underway to establish a training institute to develop local ophthalmic and paramedical professionals, aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s long-term capacity in eye care delivery.
“Our vision has always been to eliminate preventable blindness by ensuring that quality eye care is accessible to all, regardless of economic circumstance,” said Jagdish M. Chanrai, Chairman of the Tulsi Chanrai Foundation. “DP World’s continued support enables us to scale our impact, strengthen local capabilities, and reach more communities with sustainable eye care solutions.”
DP World operates in Nigeria across logistics, market access services and freight forwarding, contributing an estimated $6 billion to the country’s economy in FY2022–FY2023, according to independent analysis by Accenture.
