Nigeria’s Gas Reserves Hit 215 TCF, Enough for 85 Years at Current Output
Nigeria’s gas reserves have risen to 215.19 trillion cubic feet (TCF) and expected to last for an estimated 85 years at current production levels, according to new official figures released by the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) on Wednesday..
Presenting an overview of the nation’s hydrocarbon reserves as of January 1, 2026, the commission said Nigeria’s 2P (proved plus probable) associated gas reserves stand at 100.21 TCF, while non‑associated gas reserves are 114.98 TCF, bringing total gas reserves to 215.19 TCF. The reserves life index for gas has been put at 85 years, reflecting the country’s significant long-term gas potential.
On the liquids side, 2P crude oil reserves were put at 31.09 billion barrels and condensate at 5.92 billion barrels, totalling 37.01 billion barrels. The oil reserves life index is 59 years at current production rates.
The NUPRC noted that the 0.74% change in oil and condensate reserves as of January 1, 2026, was due to 2025 production as well as reserves updates informed by field performance and subsurface technical evaluations. In contrast, the 2.21% increase in associated and non‑associated gas reserves was attributed mainly to new discoveries and the outcome of robust reservoir studies.
The commission reaffirmed its commitment to improving upstream sector performance, growing oil and gas reserves, and ensuring stable production through full implementation of the Petroleum Industry Act 2021 and the Commission’s strategic pillars for sector reform and shared prosperity.
