Tinubu jacks up budget 39 days after submission to lawmakers

President Bola Tinubu has increased the size of the proposed 2025 budget to N54.2 trillion ($36.4 billion) from N49 trillion, citing additional revenue.
The move comes more than a month after his budget proposal was presented to the National Assembly on December 18.
In a letter to the Senate on Wednesday, Tinubu said the increase was due to additional revenue from the government’s revenue collecting agencies, such as the tax authority, customs and other agencies.
He added that extra revenue from the Federal Inland Revenue Service was N1.4 trillion while Nigeria Customs Service fetched N1.2 trillion and other agencies got N1.8 trillion.
Following the announcement, Godswill Akpabio, Senate president referred the President’s request to the Senate Committee on Appropriations for urgent consideration.
He assured lawmakers that the budget would be finalised and passed before the end of February.
