Internet subscribers in Nigeria rise by 16.9 million in one year

The number of active internet subscribers in Nigeria increased by 16.85 million in one year, according to the Nigerian Communications Commission.

The latest data obtained by Markets Reporters from the NCC showed that active internet subscriptions rose to 132.01 million in February 2020 from 115.16 million.

Broadband penetration in the country hit a record high of 39.58 percent in February as the number of 3G and 4G subscriptions increased to 75.56 million in February from 73.47 million in the previous month.

Broadband penetration is typically measured by the percentage of the total population with access to broadband networks out of each hundred.

The country had in 2018 achieved the minimum target of 30 percent broadband penetration it set in a five-year national broadband plan, from five percent in 2013.

In 2019, the NCC set a new target of 70 percent broadband penetration to be attained in the next five years, saying it had licensed infrastructure companies to deploy the optic fibre across the country.
