Lagos lawmaker Mojisola Meranda breaks two records in 50 days

Less than two months after she emerged as the first female leader of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mojisola Meranda now holds the record for the shortest-serving Speaker.

Meranda, who was appointed on January 13 following the removal of Mudashiru Obasa, finally bowed to pressure to vacate the position on Monday to pave the way for the return of her predecessor.

“This is a notice of resignation as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly,” Meranda read her resignation letter at the plenary on Monday afternoon after several weeks of political intrigues.

Despite her brief tenure, lawmakers lauded her ability to lead effectively and foster a positive atmosphere in the Assembly.

Oladimeji Longe was previously the shortest-serving Speaker of the House. He assumed office on October 6, 1983 and left December 31, 1983 after a military coup that ended the Second Republic.
